What is the average cost of replacing a shower tile?

Answer SVG
Answer
The average cost to tile a shower ranges from $1,000 to $3,500, with a typical cost of around $2,8752. This cost covers the tile material, preparation work like installing backer boards and waterproofing, and labor for installation. The tile material itself can range from $2 to $50 per square foot for ceramic tiles, $4 to $30 for porcelain tiles, $2 to $30 for travertine tiles, $4 to $10 for slate tiles, and $9 to $27 for limestone tiles2. Other materials like grout, thin-set, and waterproofing membranes typically cost $200 to $3001. Labor costs for a professional tile installer are usually $8 to $10 per square foot1. For a small repair job of just replacing a few tiles, the cost can be around $300 to $4001. Additional costs may include a new shower door ($400 to $1,900), showerhead ($20 to $200+), fixtures ($50 to $500), shower drain ($300 to $400), and any necessary repairs to the shower walls or floor1. So in summary, while a basic shower tile replacement can cost around $1,000, more extensive jobs with higher-end tile materials and additional replacements like the shower door can push the total cost up to $3,500 or more2.

  • 01:05 A tile shower is a very simple project but also it has lots of parts and pieces for you to consider the first point. You want to look at is your shower pan. So there are three options that we typically do one is going to be an acrylic shower pan. Typically it can have the drain in any location so it has some flexibility but it is going to be primarily white in color and has a threshold that's about two to three inches. The next step up from that would be to do a shower pan. A tile custom shower pan so you would be looking at tiles that are about from two inches to four inches and what's nice is you could do a nice hexagon mosaic. You could do a two by two square tile and really use that as an additional aspect typically when we have that style shower we're going to be having a threshold as well that's going to be two to three inches. A next step up from that is going to be a integrated shower pan so that's going to be no threshold zero clearance. We can still do this as its own separate project but you get a little bit more flexibility.

We can do up to a 12 by 24 size on the floor which for some people less grout and less things to clean which can be very important the next item that you want to look at is what's going to be on your shower walls so on the shower walls. You could do a 12 by 24. You could do a 6x6 mixed with a 3x6 for a more traditional look and also you're going to be looking at doing ceramic or porcelain and what's nice is when you work with lamont brothers blue will help work with you to get through all of those product selections. • 03:00 Sometimes. I take the tile that we're using on the floor that two by two or that hexagon and use that in some parts of the shower as well to tie it all in together and the next item you'll be looking at would be your plumbing fixtures. So you know standard you're going to have a fixed head and then a shower valve that can turn that on and control the temperature. But there are a lot of new things that are out. I'm typically doing a lot of hand showers on the slide rail which allows you to go ahead and lift that hand shower off which is great for cleaning the shower as well as rinsing off your legs if you've been shaving them and then also we can do body. Sprays. We have done additional grab bars in the shower. Additional towel bars in your shower as well as looking at some different valve styles whether it be thermostatic which would be able to control the heat of it as well as the volume separately which is a nice added bonus.

  • 04:01 When you're also looking at your shower. There are accessories so you could be looking at doing a tile niche which is a little alcove. Typically it's like 12 by 12 that's for you to put your shampoo and your soap and all of those other items that you're trying to get off the floor. I've been doing a lot of really big shower niches and doing really pretty mosaics at the back that can add a really beautiful aspect to your bathroom. I know you've seen those very beautiful benches inside of a shower that can be used for sitting down on or for shaving your legs and other items inside of the shower.

  • 04:38 Since you will no longer have the side of the tub to rely on another item that you want to look at would be how you're going to close off your shower so right. Now your bathtub may have a straight shower curtain rod or a curved shower curtain rod with a shower a lot of times. I'm doing some glass enclosures so that could be kind of a bypass glass enclosure which is going to be your least expensive option and moving up from there we could talk about doing a shower glass door with a panel on the side and that gets all attached to the wall with clips and what's nice is you can pick the finish of those as well maybe that would be matte black satin nickel polish chrome whatever you like and then another step up from that is if you would like some additional privacy or you want. Some additional areas to add tile we could do a partial height wall about 42 inches tall and then we put glass on top of that and attach a door. To that.

  • 05:39 Now that is a more custom feel to your shower and does increase the cost of that as well. I want to give you a three budget ranges for a typical shower project. So if you're wanting to do demo of your shower go ahead and do a standard acrylic pan tile walls and probably a 12 by 24 large scale. All the way to the ceiling you'd be doing a fixed head and a standard valve and also I always want to throw in the tile niche because where you're going to put all that shampoo and then you would have an additional maybe a grab bar or towel bar. A typical budget for that shower is coming in right. Now. It's going to be around 15 to 17 000. Now that is going to include all of the design work all of these numbers. I'm giving you today are going to include all the design all of the demo any permitting and all of the working labor to get your project done as well as all of the materials. Now when we move up a range into the better range we're talking about doing a tile pan probably with a two by two or a four by four tile with a standard three to four two to three inch high threshold and then from there we could do tile walls 12 by 24 or a mix of 3x6 and 6x6. You're going to get a tile niche. We're going to do some mosaic tile at the back of that niche and then we're also going to have a fixed head with a valve or in this scenario.

  • 07:22 You could also do a hand shower um on a slide rail as your shower head as well which I'm doing a lot of right now um a typical shower of that nature. With you know the shower glass enclosure that is going to come in around 23. So that is going to be with the shower glass of a single panel with a door as well. The last range we want to talk about is the best range so now this is going to be your real spa like atmosphere shower. In this scenario. I've gone ahead and put in you know you have the zero clearance. So you're not going to have a threshold on the shower and you're also going to have a linear drain which is very nice and integrated into the shower. I've put in a partial height wall with a panel of glass and a glass door. In this shower we're going to have mosaic tile as well as your field tile. It could be six by six three by six twelve by twenty four. I've seen. It's been the most popular tile size for a lot of these modern showers. I've been doing you're going to have a fixed head as well as a valve for that and in addition. I've done a hand shower on a slide rail on an opposite wall. So now you really have two shower heads inside of that shower. You're going to have two large tile niches and as well as a couple of grab bars and towel bars inside the shower as well. A shower in this range is going to fall in the price range of around 27 000. You can take a look at the link below and it's going to have a link to the blog post for tile showers. There you can take a look at inspirational images and get a better breakdown on all of the items that I discussed today from plumbing. Fixtures to tile types as well as the glass. Enclosure for your shower also go ahead and take a look at the website.
