How do I clean the inside of a shower head?

Answer SVG
Answer
To clean the inside of a shower head, follow these steps:
  1. Make a cleaning solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar.13 You can also use lemon juice or apple cider vinegar instead of white vinegar.1
  2. If your shower head is detachable, unscrew it and submerge it in a bucket or basin filled with the vinegar solution.13 If it's not detachable, fill a ziplock bag with the vinegar solution and secure it around the shower head using a rubber band or hair tie.13
  3. Let the shower head soak in the vinegar solution for at least 4 hours, or overnight for severe buildup.135 The vinegar will help dissolve mineral deposits and limescale buildup inside the nozzles.
  4. After soaking, remove the shower head (if detachable) and run hot water through the nozzles for a few minutes to flush out the loosened deposits.13
  5. Use an old toothbrush or scrub brush to gently scrub the nozzles and remove any remaining buildup.135 You can make a paste with baking soda and water to help scrub the nozzles if needed.1
  6. For clogged nozzles, use a toothpick, sewing needle, or safety pin to carefully unclog each one.15
  7. If the shower head has a removable filter screen, take it out and soak/scrub it separately with the vinegar solution to remove buildup.13
  8. Rinse the shower head thoroughly with water and wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth before reattaching.13
Following this vinegar soaking and scrubbing method regularly (e.g. monthly or every 3 weeks for hard water areas) will help keep your shower head flowing freely.1

  • 00:00 Hi guys it's Kiki and welcome to my shower. I rent my apartment and when I moved in and I should say my apartment building was built in the 1940s. Um I am sure that they have changed the showerhead since the 1940s. But you wouldn't know by looking at it because the combination of I don't know age and the type of water I have has led it to be so super gunky. So even though I would rather not show you the before picture. Here are the before pictures so you can see not too attractive and honestly.

  • 00:39 I just never even questioned it um. I moved in and it was like that and I clean my shower. But I just I don't know it never occurred to me to really try to do anything about that gunky buildup on my showerhead. I honestly don't even look at it. Although I'm sure once I clean it. I'll be looking at it constantly and admiring it and so if you haven't heard this tip. Then I'm happy to be the first to share it with you. But I have heard other people say that you just take a bag of vinegar put your shower head in it leave it overnight and then all of this gunky stuff will just scrub right off.

  • 01:17 So I've never tried it before and I'm gonna try. It now I figured I would bring you guys along with me okay. So here we go okay so the supplies that I have are a ziplock bag um a gallon of vinegar and some rubber bands so wish me luck and we're just gonna try. This out um okay good so far so good okay. I'm gonna get a funnel just to be safe okay. I'm back with my trusty collapsible funnel okay. This is great so well interesting I definitely think the funnel helped keep it a little neater. Otherwise. I don't know if you would maybe pour the vinegar in your bag first and if you do that then I don't know how you get the rubber band around it real effectively. But here it is and I'm gonna leave it there for hours and hours and hours because it seems like there's a lot of work to be done here in this bag okay.

  • 02:59 So there it is. It's pretty much just what you'd expect from a plastic bag of vinegar around your showerhead and you can see the bubbles hopefully. They're getting to work Oh gross ooh yeah bye. Next time we see this I'm hoping it is gonna be beautiful and shiny and sparkly. Hi guys. It's Kiki welcome back to my shower um. So I left this bag vinegar umm attached to my showerhead for like 20 hours. So I did it yesterday morning and then it's at like all day yesterday and then overnight and as you can see a lot of the gun on the showerhead has already come off and is like just in the bottom of the bag of vinegar. So I'm gonna take it off and see the result give it. A scrub give it a steam. Maybe and I'll show you guys if I think it is a worthwhile tip. This isn't weird right you guys hanging out at my shower with me.

  • 04:10 I'm not that I need gloves. It's just a habit when I clean so the rubber bands design here. I'm not going to try to pull off this way. I'm going to push it up to the top and try not to get vinegar on them. So yeah okay. I'm just gonna set this aside and I just saw this tiny little scrub brush it's made by auxo and it has like basically a toothbrush sized brush on one end and then a silicon wedge for like scraping on the other end.

  • 04:52 So I'm just going to give it a scrub and see if anything else loosens up off of it of course. I wish now I'm seeing that like I mean there's still gunk up. On the this part the neck the neck of my shower head I wish. I had a vinegar bag that could cover this whole thing because it seems like it has worked so well for the showerhead itself. But now it's not going to match because this parts gonna be kind of gross or is it. I'm gonna just take this rubber band off okay.

  • 05:29 I have my trusty steam cleaner here so we're just going to give it a final steaming see if we can get it any cleaner than it has gotten already yeah okay. It's totally working you. I actually also use my steamer to sanitize my brushes so spray my scrub brush off and that way I feel like this isn't going to be like retaining bacteria or anything gross okay. Last thing I'm going to do is just take my homemade mixture of vinegar and h2o. It's just half and half poured into a bottle and I'm just going to spray down wipe it and then show you the final result. Wow okay guys I feel really good about it um and I love that like I was just using an all-natural product vinegar so cheap so easy and when I use really harsh cleaning chemicals. Sometimes it makes me sneeze like gives me kind of an allergy type reaction and I just don't have to worry about it.
