Here are 5 effective hacks for decorating a bedroom:
-
Use light colors and mirrors to create the illusion of space. Paint walls in soft, light hues like pale blues or greens to make the room feel more open and airy. Strategically place mirrors to reflect light and visually expand the space.
-
Opt for low-profile furniture to maximize vertical space. Choose beds and nightstands that sit lower to the ground, which creates more visual space above and gives the illusion of higher ceilings.
-
Incorporate built-in storage solutions. Utilize built-in shelves, cabinets, and wardrobes to maximize storage while minimizing clutter. This allows you to keep the room tidy and spacious-looking2.
-
Add depth with a statement bed frame. In larger rooms, a substantial bed frame can add visual interest without overwhelming the space. Choose one that complements the room's style while providing a focal point2.
-
Use natural materials and simple florals. Incorporate natural textures like wood and plants to create a calming, minimalist vibe. Simple floral arrangements or potted plants can add a touch of nature and softness to the space without cluttering it2.
By implementing these design hacks, you can create a bedroom that feels spacious, serene, and well-decorated without overcrowding the space.

00:00 - Hey guys, welcome back. And today we're gonna explore the magical world of bedroom design. Now, I have designed thousands of bedrooms over the years with all the hotels that I've done. And there's a few easy tricks that I'm gonna go over today so that you guys can have a dream, dream, serene, bedroom of your choice. Okay, you guys ready? Let's go. Now, listen guys, I use a ton of gorgeous pictures to show you inspiration and to give you ideas for your spaces. And it doesn't matter if these rooms are large or small, it's the concept that I'm trying to get across. So just enjoy them and know that you can use the same ideas. So, number one thing is color matters. Oh, it's really important. You can do pallets a lot in different ways, but my go-tos for bedrooms are always the recessive tones of blues and greens and a lot of times light neutrals, that kind of soft arena. Now, what are recessive tones? They're the cooler side of the color spectrum. And what happens is they move back as you're observing them, so they end up creating an envelope that feels recessive, calm, quieting, and peaceful. And that's a perfect solution for a good bedroom. And pro tip here, never, never, ever paint a bedroom in a bright, hot orange or a brilliant red. Honestly, what are you thinking? What were they thinking? It's crazy. They obviously had something else on their minds besides sleeping for these bedrooms. So just don't do it.

01:59 Now, if you're a color lover and you wanna really go into something really rich and yummy, like you see here. With these deep blues, you can definitely do that, as long as the bedroom can be closed off from the rest of the space. And if you're in a space that's really small or already open like a studio, you gotta skip it and keep it all the same color as the rest of the space. And if you're really leaning towards the light neutrals and or you wanna even do something bright white, that's cool, that's fine, no problem. Just make sure that like you see here that it's blended with a little soft neutrals. So think ivorys, creams, even kind of a linen color, or this sort of natural leather. All of that kind of keeps the space feeling soft and restful. Now my number two tip, is to dominate your lighting situation, super important in a bedroom. And, really guys? Not that kind domination, dominate your lighting.

03:00 Now what that means is be able to control the darkness at the window level. If you have one and be able to control the lighting that you've placed in the space. So there's two levels here, I almost always place blackout drapery. Like you see here into a bedroom. And if you don't have the ability to do drapery, you can still get blackout. If you do blinds or another kind of Roman shade, that kind of thing, you can get that. And it's pretty essential. If you need to sleep during the day, you definitely wanna be able to darken your room. Now, the second aspect about lighting of course, is you always need three points of light that you have in the room. So if you're lucky enough to have something in the ceiling, that's great. You can add a pendant or something of that nature, but then you'll also wanna have lighting right close to the bedside, and that can either be pendant or it can be sconces like you see here. And then you'll need a third element, maybe some type of ambient lighting or specific task lighting. And remember that you can always control all three of these elements by the bed with dimmers or at the wall. So you wanna make sure that that's included. And if you wanna know more about drapery, then you can definitely check out my window treatment series that covers drapery as well as blinds. Okay guys, now, here's two pro tips.

04:26 If you're dealing with a small space, main bedroom, okay? Do not tiny up on your fixtures. Here's a perfect example. These are beautiful sconces and they're all fairly good sized, right? But they're light in scale and that's what makes them work in a smaller bedroom. So don't go tiny just because your bedroom is tiny because that's the mistake that makes it feel tinier. So you wanna make sure that you have something with light, and grace and expansion and gives you an opportunity to kind of swing it around and use it. And the last one is, for all of my guys out there that sleep with bedroom ceiling fans, I know you can't get away from it, you need them to sleep, I almost wish. I had one in my bedroom. But, try and find one that's attractive. There are definitely ones out there. Now that have the lights that look good. This one's a new one from Fanimation, I think. And they're really available now and so you've got to just kind of search for ones that really look low profile and good-looking.

05:32 If you're enjoying these videos, please be sure and subscribe, comment and ring that bell. Because if you ring that bell, you're gonna get notified. Every time I drop a video. Okay, so now my number three tip is to become a storage ninja. Now, I talk about storage in almost every video. But it's because it's super important to staying organized in kind of a designer way. Now there's a couple of ways. We can get this done. Double duty furnishings for the bedroom. I love beds that have storage capabilities, super important, lift them up, you've got all that dead space under there. This is a cute little solution with the rollout drawer for shoes or linens, or just regular drawers that you can see, just make sure that you're utilizing that space for anything you've got. The second thing is to go vertical. And if you saw this video on tiny bathrooms, you know how important it is to maximize your verticality when you're in a small space. Perfect example of going vertical and utilizing your space is here. You can do an up and over with your bed, with some built-in shelves, that's a really great solution. Or you can stack some shelves up the side. If you don't have room for a full nightstand, that's a great one.

07:01 If you own your house, you can go in with closed millwork. All the way across like this beautiful blue room, that's spectacular. And if you are renting or something, you can always just install a stack of shelves that's always great. The key here is that you wanna make sure that those open shelves look nice and tidy. And so remember guys, with shelves, baskets are your buddies on this one. And if they're solid front baskets, that's great, you can kind of throw things in. But like for instance, if they're clear here, you're gotta fold things up a little bit neater and make sure that they look tidy, but they can look great and be a huge, huge space saver for a tiny bedroom. Now, the other option is this, if you don't have room for a full dresser depth, which can be up to 20 inches in depth, then what you can do is grab an open shelving unit. Like, you know, there's some at IKEA, there's Pottery Barn, a bunch of places have them. And then you have to use the baskets at that point. But those shelves are probably only about 15 or 12 inches deep. So you can store less in them, but you can get more vertically. So it's a great solution, if you don't have a lot of depth for dressers that have drawers in them. Now, along with taking shelves upper wall, the other thing that happens a lot with smaller bedrooms is you don't have enough depth for a full dresser with drawers that can often be 24 to 30 inches in depth. So if that's the situation, take a look at building out something like either narrower shelves, 15, 16 inches deep, and then pop baskets on them all the way up. That's a great solution for if you don't have the depth for a dresser. So tip number is handling all the must have furnishings that you need in a bedroom. And you might be saying, I have a tiny bedroom, how do I handle anything other than my bed? Well, there's always a way and here's the key, the number one thing that you always have to have is a little sitting spot that's not the bed. Now, that can be as simple as a little tiny stool, maybe at the end of the bed, or perhaps a really lightweight scaled chair that you can maybe throw a basket for storage underneath it. That always works really well, but you always need a place to be able to sit down and maybe put your shoes on or do whatever it is. That's separate from the bed, so that's number one.

09:35 Number two thing is, if you're dealing with a small bedroom situation, a massive nine foot high headboard is just not a solution for you. So what you wanna think of is keep it low and keep it shallow. So I love the idea of just attaching this fabric along the wall, it gives it a very sort of a groovy look to it, it stays close to the wall color, and there's almost no depth to worry about. So you're not overwhelming the space, but you're still getting a statement against the back wall of where the bed is. So it's a good look to have, I also liked this done in the white, I think that's a nice attractive piece or this one's even got a little bit of a built-in shelf. It's done in just some plain plywood, so that's great. Now, some of you may not have enough floor plate for two nightstands and your bed. So here's the key. You can do that one nightstand, that's no problem, it looks super handsome in this bedroom, but note that they have a little bit of space where you can walk on the other side of the bed between that side and the wall, super important. When you look at some of these solutions where beds are shoved up against a wall, that's never a good solution and it's not viable long-term. So if you're in a situation where the only way you can get a bed into a space is to push it up against a wall, you really wanna treat that bed like a day bed. Look at this lovely one here with storage underneath it, with the three baskets, that looks great and that can be made up to look like a deep sofa during the day, and then you sleep in it at night. It's a great solution for those of you who might be in studio apartments or something like that.

11:22 And it doesn't look like you just jammed your bed against a wall 'cause you have no room. That's playing tiny and you don't wanna do that with your bedroom. Now, the last thing that you really wanna think about is rugs. If you don't have wall-to-wall carpet, you wanna have as big a rug as possible because the key there is, tiny rugs look like tiny rooms. So I know it goes against the grain and against intuition, but make that area rug as big as you can make it even if it's in a small bedroom and that will really make the space feel more expansive. So now my last tip, is don't forget about nature and plants. Now, unless you have this fabulous room like this, that has an entire wall of glass looking out over a gorgeous forest, well then you're okay. But if you're like the rest of us and you don't have a room that has that beautiful view, you need a plant in there. It's good both for oxygen exchange and because nature energetically is really calming and creates a sense of peaceful energetics. So, but you're saying your bedroom's tiny. Well, how about a hanging plant? That's easy. Get them up off the floor. Or how about this sweet little one just right there on the nightstand? I don't care how big or how small it is, just get something in there. You can do pampas grass. You can do cut flowers on a nightstand, lots of different options there, just make sure you've got some nature in there and you're gonna sleep like a baby. Okay guys.
